NEA Big Read - Come Dance With Me

Larry Neumann, Band Leader of the St. Croix Jazz Orchestra, leads us through music of the 1920s and 30s and Julie Rivett, granddaughter of Daschell Hammett, reveals details of her famous grandfather’s life. Episode 3 of Shush! "Don't Whine over Missing Robots" transfixs, and part 3 of the NEA audio guide book on the MALTESE FALCON provides illumination.

NEA Big Read - Know My Story

Jeff Guse from the Minnesota Correctional Facility’s Art Education Program describes an exhibition of work created by inmates called "Know My Story" featured at ArtReach St Croix during April's NEA Big Read. "Know My Story" touches on themes that are often uncomfortable, not unlike the themes of cynicism, fatalism and moral ambiguity found in THE MALTESE FALCON. Midway through, things lighten up with episode 2 of "Don't Whine Over Missing Robots" written and performed by the Shush! middle school audio drama team. The NEA audio guide book to THE MALTESE FALCON continues in the last half of the show.

The Big Read is made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and is a one book, one community program that brings together residents from throughout the St. Croix Valley around the Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. For more information see ArtReach St. Croix's Big Read link.

NEA Big Read - Oh! The Places We'll Go

The NEA Big Read kicks off in a big way in this episode of Voices in the Valley. Festival Theatre director Rachel Kuhnle discusses the noir classic MALTESE FALCON by Daschiell Hammett and ties it into the theater's comedic homage to the mystery genre with the play The Real Inspector Hound. The Shush! middle school audio team shares the first episode of their original sci-fi podcast series "Don't Whine Over Missing Robots" inspired by the MALTESE FALCON while the second half of the show dedicates itself to the Maltese Falcon’s audio guide produced by the National Endowment for the Arts.
